Our Guide to Gresh Local Foods
By Miriam Raftery
Since 9/11, ten times more Americans have been killed by food
poisonings than by the terrorist attacks.
Chinese wheat gluten contaminated with melamine and cyanuric
acid killed or sickened an estimated 39,000 dogs and cats in the U.
S. before a recall on over 150 pet food products was announced.
But what most people don’t realize is that the poisoned wheat
gluten was food-grade, meaning rated fit for human consumption.
If this poisoned ingredient had been sold first into the U.S. bakery
and cereal markets, it could have resulted in the largest, most
deadly mass food poisoning in American history, The Nation
magazine reported in a July 30, 2007 article titled “Poison for
Profit.”
Melamine and cyanuric acid have been found in feed used for 23
million chickens and 56,000 hogs. Yet the U.S. Food & Drug
Administration (FDA), after learning of this contamination, reversed
it’s previous finding of “no acceptable level” for these toxic
chemicals in human food! Since then, products ranging from
toothpaste to seafood have been pulled off store shelves after they
were found to be contain antifreeze, banned antibiotics, and other
prohibited ingredients.
Instead of beefing up inspections to track poisoned gluten or other
deadly products through our food supply, the U.S. Food & Drug
Administration (FDA) inexplicably announced plans to close seven
regional testing labs.
Tommy Thompson, outgoing U.S. Secretary of Health & Human
Services, warned in 2004 that “I cannot for the life of me,
understand why the terrorists have not attacked our food supply,
because it is so easy to do.”
So why has the Bush administration spent billions fighting
terrorism overseas, yet cut funds to protect us from terrorist
attacks on our food supply?
The Nation argues that a mentality of “E. Coli conservatism” has
rewarded corporate greed (under the guise of reducing big
government and maintaining faith in a free market) at the expense
of our safety.
Our food protection agencies are “incompetent by design,” the
article concludes, noting that only 1% of all imported food is ever
inspected by the U.S. government – and agencies have no power to
order a mandatory recall.
Not surprisingly, these scary truths are sending shock waves
through U.S. consumers.
According to a USA Today/Gallup Poll, 83% of shoppers say that
they’re suspicious of food from China – and 92% want imported
foods label with country of origin.
Half say that they’re making an effort to buy U.S. food products,
yet most have found it difficult to figure out just where those food
items originated.
Fortunately, starting September 30th, all beef, pork, fresh and
frozen fruits, vegetables and peanuts sold in the U.S. will be
required to display country-of-origin labels.
Meanwhile, here are some steps you can take to help provide safer
foods for your family.
TAKE ACTION!
You can send a message asking the FDA to halt closure of its inspection facilities by
